The design was sketched through a paper cutting technique, where the papery 'marble pieces' were sprinkled haphazardly on the canvas. The design’s inspiration and technology both combine the idea of gentle imperfection and the beauty of everyday things.&nbsp; The design was part of the PatternLab22 collection, with a record of nearly 100 sold designs during 2021–2022. Terrazzo was bought by Nanso and released in 2023. The aim was to create an identity that stands out on social media and generates interest around the topic of design for a wider audience. The resulting identity was focused on bright, attention-grabbing colours combined with clean typography and graphic illustrations. The abstract graphic elements are a visualization of the rhythms of discussion: the back and forth, the overlapping and the push and pull. undulating paper-thin waves spanning several meters in both length and height. The piece is supported by an animated infographic based on recorded data of changes in global mean sea level from the past century. The work informs and invites a dialogue on our relationship with the environment, and the future of our seas. Sea levels are rising largely due to human-induced global warming. As greenhouse gas emissions increase, water temperatures rise causing thermal expansion of seawater and the melting of bodies of ice which drive rising sea levels. Since 1916, the global mean sea level has risen by around 0,2m. In a high emission scenario, sea levels are projected to rise up to nearly a meter by the end of the century, and up to several meters by the end of the next two. This would have a disastrous impact on shorelines and coastal human settlements, especially during storms when sea levels rise additionally and flood coastal areas. For marine cities like Helsinki, this unpredictability poses a future threat. The installation aims to draw attention to this urgent environmental topic through silent activism. The spatial setup raises awareness in a quiet but effective way by creating monumental dimension and mood around the silent threat of rising sea levels. This project was done in collaboration with the Department of Visual Communication Design and Päivi Häikiö, who mentored the project team throughout. The contrast between soft and sharp floral shapes makes the surface pattern both bold and timeless. The surface pattern was designed as the main surface pattern of the new Finnwear x Kesko capsule collection. Pöyhee was commissioned by Finnwear and released in 2024. The project got its start through a Aalto University course in collaboration with the National Museum of Finland. The pieces were designed as a graphic informative product, then lazercut at Fablab and assembled by hand. The challenge was to design something aesthetic and historically informative, yet simple and cost-effective enough to be a viable product in the museum shop. The end result ia a geometric, contemporary design produced with modern techniques from traditional local materials. The collection was sold at the National Museum of Filnand from 2015 to 2021.
